Corporate Work

VeloPark BMX Manchester (2013)

Produced, shot and edited by myself. This promotional video was created to be marketed towards teenagers who may be interested in attending the junior BMX club.

Radical Democratic Education in Gang Cultures (2014)

Strictly an educational video, it was created specifically for an academic presentation for (and in collaboration with) a PHD student.

Elephant Atta at Birmingham Eid Mela (2014)

On behalf of Se7en productions, I produced this promotional video showing Elephant Atta's community work as part of the Birmingham Eid Mela. I planned the shoot and laid out what would need to be done in order to best emphasise the family friendly activities organised by Elephant Atta.

Heineken Brewery Developments

Shot again on behalf of Se7en, the following video involved documenting the new developments at
Manchester brewery. With the main focus being on how the new investments were being used, on behalf of Heineken.

Fictional Shorts

Never Never Land (2012)

A unique creative short. The film uses fantasy characters as a metaphor for our societies disinterest in helping the homeless.

Overall the film has a good pace and a strong sense of style to it. The gritty landscapes and architecture of match well with the tone of loss and urban decay. The writing itself is  minimalist, and the film really benefits from the smooth and well performed narration.

Conscription (2012)

Filmed in one shot, the short was produced for entry into the One Shot Movie Competition, for which it was shortlisted; and later went on to be screened at the One Take Film Festival in Croatia.

Working as a lighting technician, I actively helped to define the look and contribute where possible to defining the overall look of the film. The movie is overall well put together, well choreographed and does what it set out to do. However I do feel that the tension and form of the story was somewhat limited by the whole one shot element of the craft on display here. There is a somewhat rushed feeling to the action that stunts the potential to really draw out the dramatic tension in the actions that are unfolding here.

Im With You (2015)

Based on a Daily Mail article, I'm With You follows a young woman whose father passed away when she was young. However, knowing he was dying her father left a number of video recordings to help motivate, support and advise her during key moments of her life.

Overall the film is a bit clunky, with a kind of student film aura about it. The acting is good for the most part, although there are a few stilted moments in the piece. Visually there are some nicely shot sequences. The lighting and overall look of the film is fine, yet I can't help but feel the scenes in living room look somewhat flat: with a kind of studio / multi-cam set up not working to the scenes advantage.

Altogether it was a fun and ambitious project, but I'm not sure it entirely worked in the end.

Have You Met The Joneses - (Filmed in 2015) Coming Soon

A short mockumentary web series about a regular family, with an extremely extraverted aspiring actor father. As a camera operator I filmed various sections of the first few episodes and assisted in other aspects of the production in an uncredited capacity.

An interesting and well shot piece that should be released very soon. Altogether the film has a nice look to it. Although at times I can't help but feel that it could have been smoothed out with another draft of the script.

Actors Monologues

(Warning, some of these videos are in the process of being uploaded so are currently unavailable for viewing.)

The following monologues were produced by myself with actor Stevie Helps:

A Midsummer Nights Dream

This first monologue is an edited dialogue scene taken from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream. In order to set the scene for this piece we provided a contemporary setting in Salford and decided to use the camera as a replacement for Helena. During the speech, Demetrius tries to avidly explain that he is not in love with her. As Demetrius (Stevie) moves about in the shot, I decided to track him along hand held, giving the scene a realism and intimacy that the scene lacks within the play itself.

Whilst the play itself is a farcical comedy, our interpretation and monologue recording is a more down to earth tragedy.

Fireman - A 'Shameless' Monologue

Filmed in a tight (almost claustrophobic) location, the monologue is pot boiler. It begins with an almost  timid confrontation, and builds up to an emotional outpouring crescendo. Unlike the previous monologue, the shot is static. The tension is therefore held in the scene threefold: the tension produced by the deep seated anger, the claustrophobic location and the stillness of the frame itself.

Konstantin's Monologue - The Seagull by Anton Chekhov

Another intense and character driven piece here, this one however is filmed from above looking down on an ashamed and bitter character. Withe the camera angle emphasising the insecurity of the character in this performance.

'I Love My Wife' Monologue - Version 1

With the first version of this monologue, I decided to record the action in a very close, conversational manner.  As the emotional intensity of the scene begins to build, we find ourselves feeling sympathetic for the conflicted soul of the character in the piece.

Joey's Story - From 'Road' by Jim Cartwright

This monologue is something of an experimental short. In it, myself and Stevie attempted to go into the mind of this character and represent it visually as well as emotionally, as you would do in recording a more traditional monologue. There was a strong collaborative element to this short piece. At times, I would recommend an experiment with different lenses or camera angles and Stevie would likewise go back and forth with his own suggestions.

I Love My Wife' Monologue - Version 2

The second recording of this monologue has a much more open and free flowing nature to it. With this version having been recorded outside (in a large open space) there is an interesting parallel applied, between the personal revelation of the repressed emotions and the freeing and expansive nature around him. The choice of camera movement as well, with it's free flowing handheld style, also adds to the slow emotional revelation.
